If you haven’t been to a yoga class before, you may be wondering what to expect…
- You will be working gently and gradually, at your own pace. You will not be asked to do anything with which you are uncomfortable. Instead, you should find the class relaxing yet stimulating, as you explore your own abilities and extend these abilities little by little each week.
- Be prepared to practise yoga postures (asanas) and to learn some simply breathing exercises (pranayama) and relaxation techniques.
- During class, please be sure to work within your own abilities, being mindful of any problems that may restrict your ability to perform the various exercises. Please tell the teacher about any health problems such as problems with joints and muscles, circulatory or respiratory problems, bad backs, dizziness, panic attacks, eye and ear problems and anything else you feel is relevant. Before performing each exercise, you will be told of any particular precautions you need to take, but if in doubt about this or any other aspect of the yoga class, please ask!
Yoga class is a chance for you to spend some time focussing entirely on yourself – for some of us, this is the only time we get to do this all week! In the midst of our busy lives, yoga gives us a chance to experience a little peace and to recharge our physical and mental batteries. Please come to class prepared to make the most of that chance. It will help if you pay attention to a few simple guidelines:
- Try to leave at least two hours between eating and doing yoga.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing that does not restrict movement in any way. Please bring a couple of extra layers for warmth.
- Be prepared to work in bare feet if possible, though you will need socks to keep warm in the periods of relaxation.
- Bring a mat or towel for floor work, and a blanket to keep you warm during relaxation. Mats can be ordered from Yorkshire Coast Yoga – ask in class, or email equipment@YorkshireCoast.yoga-classes.info. We can also supply yoga blocks and straps to help with your yoga practice.
- Try to arrive at class in a suitable frame of mind: you may like to take a minute or two before class to quieten down the mind and begin to relax.
- Work up to your limits but not beyond them: do not strain. Yoga is non-competitive.
- Ask if you are unsure! Questions and feedback are always very welcome.
