What is Yoga?

"Yoga is an immortal art, science and philosophy. It is the best subjective psycho-anatomy of humankind ever conceived for the experience of physical, mental, intellectual and spiritual well-being." (B.K.S. Iyengar)

The word ‘yoga’ is Sanskrit for ‘unified’, ‘brought together’, ‘joined together’. It refers to a set of practices designed to ‘unify’ the various aspects of the self – specifically, the mental, spiritual and physical aspects – in order to develop greater peace, calm and well-being. Most people coming to a yoga class will experience some of these psychological benefits alongside the varied and remarkable physical benefits brought about by regular yoga practice.

In the west, we are primarily familiar with yoga as a set of physical practices. In India, however, yoga developed over thousands of years and referred to various means of bringing the self to its ultimate potential. These means might have been physical, but they were just as likely to involve meditation, study, ethics and other spiritual disciplines.

So yoga is more than simply performing balances and postures. In essence, it is a lifestyle that may incorporate physical exercises as part of a set of practices leading to peace and happiness. In a yoga class, you will be taught physical exercises, and you are also likely to be introduced to relaxation and meditation techniques and breathing exercises. As you advance, you may also want to consider some of the lifestyle implications of yoga.

Yoga is suitable for everybody, including those with disabilities.
